Tickbourne Encephalitis

Background of Illness

This can affect the nervous system, it starts to humans by bite of infected tick and virus is maintained from small mammals, livestock and some birds. It occurs mostly in parts of Austria, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Switzerland, Croatia, Albania and Baltic states.

Vaccine Facts

There are three dosages given at 0, 1 month and 12 months, but for rapid protection children and adults can have the second dose at 2 weeks which gives 90% protection. It is an unlicensed vaccine which is given on a named patient basis. Immunity lasts three years and reinforcing dosage is recommended at three years.

Complications

Contraindication is anybody who has had an anaphylactic reaction to tickbourne encephalitis vaccine and confirmed anaphylactic reaction to egg. Temperature can occur in children after vaccination, but local reaction like swelling and pain may also occur.
